Travelport/Galileo Basic Functionality Course

Galileo is a computer reservations system (CRS) owned by Travelport. As of 2000, it had a 26.4% share of worldwide CRS airline bookings. In addition to airline reservations, the Galileo CRS is also used to book train travel, cruises, car rental, and hotel rooms. The Galileo system was moved from Denver, Colorado, to the Worldspan datacenter in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 28, 2008, following the 2007 merger of Travelport and Worldspan (although they now share the same datacenter, they continue to be run as separate systems).Galileo is subject to the Capps II and its successor Secure Flight program for the selection of passengers with a risk profile.Galileo is a member of the International Air Transport Association, of the OpenTravel Alliance and of SITA.
HISTORY
Galileo traces its roots back to 1971 when United Airlines created its first computerized central reservation system under the name Apollo. During the 1980s and early 1990s, a significant proportion of airline tickets were sold by travel agents. Flights by the airline owning the reservation system had preferential display on the computer screen. Due to the high market penetration of the Sabre and Apollo systems, owned by American Airlines and United Airlines, respectively, Worldspan and Galileo were created by other airline groups in an attempt to gain market share in the computer reservation system market and, by inference, the commercial airline market.Galileo was formed in 1987 by nine European carriers — British Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Alitalia, Swissair, Austrian Airlines, Olympic, Sabena, Air Portugal and Aer Lingus.

HISTORY OF GDS
Back in the days of american commercial aviation, passengers were relatively few and airlines’ routes and fare were tightly regulated by civil Aeronautics Board. These were publish in series of books title’The Official Airline Guide’, from which travel agents or Consumers could construct an itenary and then call the airline staff to make the reservation and file it.But with time, demand for air travel increased and the schedules grew complex and the manual process became impractical.
American Airline pioneered and installed the first automated booking system called Electromechanical Reservoir,in 1946.Automated tool was a great success and widely implemented by several other airlines included few hotels for inventory control. With year on year the machine evolved and finally in 1953 American Airline personnel invited IBM’s sales representative to visit the reservoir system and look for ways to improve the system. They together introduced the idea of Airline Reservation System. After that there was no looking back,CRS brought a revolution in the way travel agents used to book and construct itineraries. It started with airline reservations and got into hotels, cruises, car rentals, etc giving it the terminology of Global Reservation System which acted as consolidating various services on a single platform.
GDSs were among the first E-commerce companies in the world facilitating B2B electronic commerce in mid 1970s. Galileo(under the Apollo Reservation System name) was Founded in 1971 by united airlines to cater to the needs of travelers by providing access to their reservation systems to travel agencies.
